Recently, I've returned to reworking a novel I completed two years ago. I thought I had taken a break of less than a year. There were several scenes that I built around specifc memories and they were layered with a carefully curated sound track and each character was in a sense getting a theme song.
The Guns of Brixton for the character names Linda Cruz!!
I was convinced that those scences were stronger with the use of lyric fragments from those songs. But then I went back to double check that my use of just a bit of the songs would pass any issues of copywrite or permission. The answer was a clear, No. So I'm including a couple of resources regarding using song lyrics in our writing.
